We do not yet know what is in the EU Reform Treaty. However, we have some insight into the Charter of Fundamental Rights, which forms part of the Treaty.
Foreign Minister Dermot Ahern informed the EU, in a letter that Ireland â,,,considered the [Charter] to be an important statement of the EUâs values and of the rights of citizens vis a vis the Unionâs institutions.â?
Whew! Thatâs a relief! That means the Charter has no application in a domestic setting.
Industrial conglomerates subjected to dawn raids by EU competition authorities will consult the Charter, but data subjects whose privacy rights are breached by the Department of Family and Social Affairs will have to look elsewhere for their remedies.
